What is the process for recruiting placement students? Students are asked to apply with a CV and covering letter in January. We then hold a recruitment day, which involves an interview, presentation and group exercise. We also have a maths test for the roles that are numerically based.
What are you looking for in a placement student? Good relevant work experience such as working in retail. We want students who are currently completing a degree where they will be able to use their education and apply it into the workplace. We want students that will come in and be enthusiastic, want to learn, enjoy what they are doing and contribute to the success of our business.
What does the placement involve? Our placements last for 12 months and the student will have their day to day tasks to complete for their area but will have the opportunity to develop in the role and assume more responsibilities for the area. We look at this as a mutually beneficial experience for both parties. It gives us the chance to build up a relationship with the student so that when they graduate they are looking to come back and continue their career with ourselves.
How would you advise students to make the most of the experience? Don’t just look at being able to do your day to day responsibilities as having a good placement year. Once you are competent in these responsibilities, look to get involved in other areas to develop your knowledge and skills, push yourself and ask questions as it will help not only your understanding of the role but your understanding of your capabilities in the workplace. Most of all make the most of the experience it is a fantastic opportunity and enjoy it!
